So since I can't wait for Vol.2, I've decided to go through the lyrics of Vol.1 and see if I can figure some possible meanings for all or most of the songs.
I came to looking at overdose, and I'm pretty sure that most of us have a pretty good idea that its most likely about drugs/overdosing.
Well I was wondering if any thinks the drug might be morphine? I come to this conclusion because it says Morpheus a couple times in it and Morpheus is the god of dreams in Greek mythology, and is also where the name of morphine is derived from.
Anyone else see the connection?

Good thinking, especially since a drug as powerful as morphine can become someone's god. I had just figured that the song might apply to any pill form drug one might use to o.d. but what you are thinking makes more sense.

I think the association with drugs would be the most immediate obvious connection, but the song is more than that. The overdose can be from anything we bury the pain and loneliness with - alcohol, food or drugs. I think Overdose tweaks a sensitive nerve in most of us.

I think this song has universal meaning...
As Nox said, we all have that one weakness... & when things dont go our way, we seem to retreat back to that weakness - thats the beauty of the song, it works for everyone.

"Morpheus has the ability to take any human's form and appear in dreams."
I think it's quite obvious.

Im listening to vol. 1 and I have replayed overdose about 8 times now! Oh Man, there's nothing like a bored afternoon to rekindle your love for a song. When J. is screaming
No no more!
God Morpheus why did you leave me when I had need of your love?
No holding back now!
Give me the real thing!
I've got a reason
When I am alone
Don't you ever try to take me back.
then the heavy breathing, wow....that is so powerful. It makes it hard for me to breathe. I love HURT so flippin much!
anyways

it's got nothing to do with morphine or similar drugs. "Morpheus" is just the same guy as i mentioned earlier.
he's just taking more of what he's got to feel better, to feel something, to feel "her".
i've been in a similar situation.

now I must diagree with you zanex, not on the part that its because of a woman, but on the part that its not about drugs. because of the Morphius mention (In Greek and Roman mythology, the son of sleep and the god of dreams who lay on an ebony bed in a dim-lit cave, surrounded by poppies. Morpheus was the son of Hypnos from whence comes hypnosis. To be in the arms of Morpheus is to be asleep. The drug morphine is named after Morpheus, and since morphine is a narcotic: Tending to induce sleep or unconsciousness like a drug which produces a state of numbness ) so this seems that he is referring to morphine or another agent like it. Also these lines in the song make me feel like he is talking about some sort of substance:
God Morpheus why did you leave me when I had need of your love?
No holding back now!
Give me the real thing!
I've got a reason
When I am alone
when he says "why did you leave me when I had need of you love? No holding back, give me the real thing" its like he's been abusing whatever he has been abusing for awhile and its losing its effect and he's needing more...

i've tried drugs like morphine and you just dont give a shit.
i mean, of course its got to do with drugs, but not specifically with morphine.
it could be anything. but hell, who gives a shit, it doesnt matter what drug hes using. he feels like Shit with a capital S and thats all that matters. ive felt like that and its not something youd want.
his drug is failing to give him the effect that he wants and hes not too happy about it.
sorry, im quite drunk and cant give you the right words and i cant think properly.

Im smiling so much right now, cause that was cute! Yeah well I agree with you that it could ba anything that he's abusing, but morphine makes sense to me! And I think the majority of the world has felt like Shit (notice the capital) And that's why HURT and all the guys rock, they sing about stuff anyone on this planet can relate to in some way.

I know from interviews that J. at one time suffered from Insomnia.
The god of sleep and dreams left J. when J. was in need of his love.
Now listen to the 1st verse of the song... perhaps he's taking sleeping pills.
I've gone a while without sleep before... the world becomes quite surreal.
Plus depression can make you not give a fuck about anything. Especially your own life.
He's alone (probably because of a girl)
He can't sleep
Perhaps he's telling Morpheus not to hold back now... Make it the REAL thing (the most real sleep? DEATH) and don't ever try to take me back. (double meaning? is he saying that to the girl or the god?)
J. could have overdosed on sleeping pills... or tried to... or just thought about it really hard.

Yeah man, i know there's been times when i'd rather sleep than think about a shitty experience... especially woman related issues. (Which after reviewing the lyrics online... i'd say that the song is more about missing the girl than the drugs.)
Ever gotten paranoid when your girlfriend didn't answer her phone?
It's amazing how the smallest things can spark such creativity and coalesce into such a powerful masterpiece that touches so many people in so many different ways.
I almost feel bad deciphering his lyrics publically. I completely understand why J. doesn't rip apart people's views of his songs by talking about their true meanings.

Well honestly the reason i came here to begin with was to find out what the hold up was with my Re-Consumation cd. After a few weeks with no word i got pretty damn impatient and started bitching up a storm. lol.
Not only have i never enjoyed a band so much as to purchase their goods or subscribe to their message boards... but i've never posted to ANY forums whatsoever.
The thing is... i'm a musician... and Hurt has made me pay much closer attention to the big picture as far as composition. Unfortunately they have also ruined almost all other music for me as well... how can i listen to anything else when "there's so much emotion" to be heard? i do get some 10 years in there every once in a while... but Hurt is the greatest.

I have their first album "Killing all that holds you" but that was self-released. They have some other earlier work but with a different lead singer. Their new album "Division" is coming out the first of March. cannot wait!

All i've heard is the Autumn Effect, but when a band can transfer their 1st hit (wasteland) to an acoustic version and make it just as good if not better... i'm getting the album. The whole album is great. The feel is a lot like Hurt and Tool/APC. In fact i originally thought Maynard started up another band when i 1st heard Wasteland.
Hurt is better though...

10 years definitely rocks! But back to Overdose... what Shawman said really does bring a new light to how I listen to the song. I never thought of it that way. Still, though, one of the greatest things about the song that doesn't change with the meaning is the picture the song paints in your mind. I was sleepy one day (heh, interesting connection) so I decided to lay down, put in my awesome Shure e2c earbuds so I could hear every little detail, and fall asleep to some HURT. Well, no pun intended, Overdose did exactly the opposite of putting me to sleep. I got this visual image that suddenly came to my mind and a saw Overdose in a whole new way. You know how in English classes they tell you how to interpret a poem, how the rhyme scheme, diction, rythm, and all that stuff plays a role in portraying the meaning? Well all that does the same for Overdose. It's like the song plays out a timeline of the character's addiction (or in Shawman's case, lack of sleep) in stages. He starts out very tired or down, then he briefly explodes when he gets frustrated with what's happening. He then tries to calm himself down but finally just explodes again with hate and frustration, hoping for an end to the madness, death, if that's what it takes. Then after the second outburst he's breathless, and his body isn't functioning normally, he's breathing heavily. Then, he starts mumbling, he can't even form coherent words ("ya no no no don't da doh" - however you would spell whatever he's saying) anymore. And then it just cuts off with the guitar as if it's going out of tune, like he finally just when lights out (either him dying or the sleeping pills finally kicking in, however you interpret it). And this whole time I can see him in a room in the corner on the floor during each stage in a certain position, screaming, breathing heavily, covering his face. It's soooo real! Who would have thought that English stuff would have come it handy, eh? Amazing fucking song! I suck with words though, otherwise I'd be writing this shit. So, needless to say, this isn't the best "written" interpretation but I think I made my point.

10 years is a pretty good band, I love the singers voice, it's great. Back to Overdose though..I was listening to it with headphones (which is always a different experience) but..what is being repeated towards the end? It sounds like Bass? Face? Its like a computer voice repeating some word or something

I guess I haven't had the time to study my patterns, if any on what I post and where..I was listening to the album with headphones on a while back and noticed someone/something saying something at the end of the song so I made a mental reminder to check it out the next time I was on the Forum...and that is it.
